Andrés Neuman explains Hacerse el muerto to students at Saint Louis University-Madrid

“Escribe para saber, no porque sabes..”

Andrés Neuman began his lecture humoring the room and explaining, “Quiero estar de pie, no es síndrome de hombre bajito, pero bueno.” He continued, launching into an hour and 15-minute dialogue powered by questions from students seeking understanding and revelation in the short stories and “microrrelatos” of his book, Hacerse el muerto. His responses drove at the intention of the text and the general philosophy that led to its composition. Touching on the title of the work Neuman, explained “Hacerse el muerto es jugar con algo muy serio. Es un acto de fingir, pero fingir algo que nos da miedo.” The rest of his book similarly delivers this idea of paradoxical duality, calling into question much of the human experience. Laden with nuance and philosophical overtones, Hacerse el muerto delivers a successful examination of that which is truly human.

The first “microrrelato” in the volume, “El fusilado” explores mortality through the story of a soon to be executed man:
