Amiri Baraka (born LeRoi Jones) was born on this day, October 7, in the year 1934. He founded the Black Arts Movement of the 1960s in Harlem and has published more than 40 essays and books. Professor, activist, poet, and jazz critic, Baraka’s work is varied and extensive. He has collaborated with many artists, poets, and activists, including the Beat Poets, the New York School poets, The Roots, and Sun Ra.
